The Okanagan has it all! - A year round mild climate with seemingly endless summer days and mild winters, sunshine, beaches, world-class dry powder skiing, hiking, golfing, water sports, wineries, shopping, a vibrant, growing economy and so much more. At Acorn Homes, we strive to provide the best new home value available in the Okanagan.
'Golondrinas' is the Spanish name for little birds which are a type of swallow. Swallows, as you know, are very persistent- they adapt and thrive despite difficult circumstances. These little birds also have a song which encourages those around them. The Las Golondrinas project was formed to help the growing numbers of Mexican children who are persistent in facing challenges which are overwhelming for them. And, like the ever-present song of the golondrinas – these children also bring joy and encouragement to those who assist them!
Las Golondrinas consists of a fully operating children's home Casa Famoso, and another home under construction since November 2010. Casa Famoso accommodates nine orphans with seven of them from the Famoso family. The houseparents, Cathia and Fernando, have three children of their own, so, through Las Golondrinas support, they are enabled to care for their new family of twelve.
With a sense of belonging, and away from the institutional concept of "orphanage", children within the Las Golondrinas projects benefit from the security of a home and a family having a foundation of Christian principles. Its mandate is to provide children in need with a 'regular' lifestyle of 'parents' and 'siblings' in a caring family-oriented environment.
Las Golondrinas operates as a special project within Hope For The Nations (www.hopeforthenations.com), a registered charity based in Kelowna, B.C. Canada. Through local and international partners, HFTN provides orphans and vulnerable children with caring homes, healthcare and education in 20 countries around the world. HFTN is recognized as an "NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations".
In Colima, Mexico, where Las Golondrinas is located, HFTN works with "Hogar de Amor y Protecciòn al Niño, AC", (Home of Love and Proctection for Children) a civil society which grew out of a local church group. Operating since 1996, "Hogar de Amor" has numerous homes caring for children at risk or in need.
Volunteers are encouraged to be involved with the Las Golondrinas projects. It is heartwarming to hear the happy voices of the children as you assist them with their daily chores or as you help with construction of the second home next door. Sponsorships for individual children are also available and the monies raised go toward the household budget as well as special treats for the kids.
